Guidelines for Submission of Essays to

The Merton Annual


Manuscripts should be prepared according to the following guidelines:

1. Endnotes rather than footnotes are to be used and should follow this as a basic model for book references:
Thomas Merton, A Man in the Divided Sea (New York: New Directions, 1946), pp. 211-213.
2. Full documentation for all references should be included.
3. References to Thomas Merton texts or sources should be to a specific text and printing, or library collection.
4. Ibid and op cit should be avoided.
5. Parenthetical references within the manuscript should be avoided.
6. Microsoft Word is the preferred computer program for submissions.
7. Electronic submission by e-mail to the addresses below is preferred.
8. Articles accepted for inclusion will be edited, and returned to the author for revisions.
9. Please double-check all quotations from secondary sources.
10. Submit the final revised copy on disk and as hard-copy.
11. Use TIMES NEW ROMAN, 12 FONT for text and 10 FONT for endnotes.  
12. All book titles should be italicized only and not underscored or fully capitalized.
13. Upon acceptance, you will be asked to write a “contributor’s note.” This will be approximately 50 to 60 words and focused on your position and recent accomplishments.
