QuotationThe new books have arrived. I am delighted to get to [Nicolas] Leskov at last, he has long been on my list. Have you published The Cathedral? I think that is supposed to be his great novel. The tales are wonderful, with that great, creative, nineteenth-century Russian love of the imaginary world they found they could make. It is exhilarating to read, and I love the book. I am also happy with Lowell's Imitations. Without trying to evaluate where it stack up in Lowell's whole production, I just want to say it is a book I particularly enjoy. I love it; I keep going back to it. It is fascinating, because of the unique way in which the poems are like the originals and yet not, take liberties, go into a montage, blend and exclude as they please. It is a fascinating way to render foreign verse.
