Scope and Content

Merton tells Archbishop Yü Pin of his studies of Eastern philosophy and the need of it in the West. He also mentions plans to publish translations of the writings of Chuang Tzu. Fr. Paul Chan, Secretary General of Sino-American Amity in New York, received Merton's letter. Archbishop Yü Pin had been there, but had returned to Taiwan. Chan recommended Merton write to Dr. John C. H. Wu of Seton Hall University for some scholarly advice on Chuang Tzu. Merton followed this advices and began correspondence with Wu.

Biography

Archbishop Paul Yü Pin, later elevated to Cardinal, was Archbishop of Nanking (Nanjing), China. He was opposed to the Chinese Communist government and was living in Taipei, Taiwan. He had an assignment from the Holy See to re-establish Fu-Jen Catholic University in Taiwan.
