Scope and Content

This collection contains two original, signed pieces from Ivan Illich, and a copy of a letter from Merton. Illich is inviting Merton to attend a meeting of clergy interested in addressing challenges posed by the Church in Central and South America, as well as the growing Latin American population in the United States. Illich spells out much of his ideas for the direction for the conference in a letter to Fr. Edward Burke with a copy sent to Merton. Merton expresses regret in not being able to attend, but expresses support for the project.

Biography

Born in Vienna in 1926, Ivan Illich was the co-founder of the Center for Intercultural Documentation (CIDOC) in Cuernavaca, Mexico. He has organized seminars on "Institutional Alternatives in a Technological Society" and trained priest in the culture of Latin America. (Source: The Ivan Illich Archive.)
