Dom James Fox came to Gethsemani in 1927. He was serving as guestmaster when Merton's younger brother, John Paul, visited the monastery, and Fox made arrangements for John Paul's baptism. In 1948, Fox was elected abbot after the death of Dom Frederic Du

1971/09/05 HNS from Bamberger, John Eudes I was asked to review Rice's book on Merton. I had to be short- but thought I should correct sends Fox a review of Rice's biography (review not extant here), The Man in the Sycamore Tree : The Good Times and Hard Life of Thomas Merton : An Entertainment with Photographs, and informs Fox of some factual errors in the book «detailed view»

1971/09/08 TNS to Bamberger, John Eudes I did not receive your Review, until Sunday, 9/5--Thus I could not have contacted you about it, responds to Bamberger's review of Edward Rice's The Man in the Sycamore Tree : The Good Times and Hard Life of Thomas Merton : An Entertainment with Photographs, and provides his memories of the building of the hermitage and the idea of a new Trappist foundation in South America, while also giving his perspective on what he sees as Rice's mischaracterization of tensions between Merton and him «detailed view»
