QuotationI just learned of the death of poor old Pasternak... I cannot help thinking that within a few years Russia is going to regard him as one of her very great writers, and Zhivago will be widely read there. I do not, as he did, repudiate his earlier work. To my mind Safe Conduct is still very remarkable and there are some passages in it which are superb. I must reread his earlier stories too. I hope Pasternak wil be a vital link between Russia's past and her future.
