Merton's friend Leslie Dewart suggested to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that they should interview Merton for an episode on Christian peacemaking of an upcoming series on Christian concerns. Merton turns down Vincent Tovell's request stating that he would not be permitted to appear on television, and expresses some negative impressions of the medium, though having expressed rarely having seen television.
