Scope and Content

Arthur Sulzberger writes to Merton after having seen a letter from Merton to a mutual friend, Grayson Kirk. In that letter, Merton makes a statement about Christian appreciation of "natural wisdoms that have stayed alive". Sulzberger, as a Jew, states that he shares that appreciation as well and sees no conflict. He also asks Merton about some of the challenges posed by Communist China. Merton responds concerning Christian and Jewish spirituality and appreciation of other wisdom traditions. In addition, he offers his take on the necessity of recognizing the reality of Communist China, a general ignorance in most Americans of the issue, a suggestion for a series on Marxism in the Sunday Times Magazine, and the response of Latin America and Africa to Communism and Capitalism.

Biography
