Scope and Content

This collection contains original letters from Daniel Berrigan and copies of Merton's letters to Berrigan. They discussed the peace movement and the involvement of clergy of different faiths, the nuclear arms race, Cold War politics, Vietnam, the future of Latin America, racial inequities and Civil Rights, non-violence and the justification of violence against property, the role of religious orders in the peace movement, aggiornamento in religious life, and the question of obedience to religious superiors and the Church hierarchy. Merton and Berrigan both struggled with issues of censorship of their writings on peace and nuclear war. Later, Berrigan had conflicts with both religious and secular authorities because of his acts of civil disobedience.

Biography

Daniel Berrigan was a Catholic priest, social activist, and poet who entered the Society of Jesus (1939), was ordained (1952), and after studying in France (where he was influenced by the worker-priest movement), he taught at Catholic schools until becoming associate professor of theology at LeMoyne College (Syracuse, NY) (1957-1962). After serving as assistant editor of Jesuit Missions in New York (1963-1965), he became associate director of United Religious Work (1966-1969).

Active in opposing the Vietnam War, he went with professor Howard Zinn to Hanoi, North Vietnam, to assist in obtaining the release of three American pilots (1968); the diary he kept during this mission, along with 11 poems, became Night Flight to Hanoi (1968). With his brother, Philip Berrigan, he gained national attention for destroying draft registration files in Catonsville, Md. (1968); in 1970 he was sentenced to three years in prison for this, but he went underground for several months until federal authorities arrested him on Block Island (off Rhode Island). After 18 months in prison, he was paroled in 1972 and participated with his brother in the first Plowshares Action (1980), a protest at the General Electric Plant at King of Prussia, Pa. Living among Jesuits, writing and conducting retreats, he was arrested regularly for his protest actions at weapons manufacturers and other sites (1980-1992). He wrote over 50 books, including The Trial of the Catonsville 9 (1970), an autobiography (1987), and at least four films. 70. 1967/07/15 TALS to Merton It seems like ages, know I've been remiss. Jim Forest sent on one of yrs. to him and got me to get [writing from Pueblo, Colorado] work with Mexican-American youth with Upward Bound program / Loretto sisters who knew Merton from Kentucky / "open parish setup" like Oklahoma City project - problem that most are upper-middle class and do not want to mix with poor / Cornell University offer / description of Pueblo area «detailed view»
71. 1967/09/16 (#01) TL[c] from Merton Here is some stuff I dug out of the pile. Not much, if any, about nonviolence but some on Zen and background on Zen for Berrigan's seminar on non-violent and violent religious traditions - Zen and Samurai fighting - swordsmanship without violence - non-aggressive posture - "Turning violence back on itself" - D. T. Suzuki / death of Ad Reinhardt - first of "immediate gang" to go - "I guess my whole bunch won't outlast sixty." «detailed view»

73. 1967/09/no? HLS to Merton A short note and a loud cry like the Beatles, HELP. My books such as they are still unpacked seminar on violence, non-violence, and religious traditions - asking Merton's input on Hindu and Zen ideals / little hope for Hanoi trip / [writing from Cornell University] "Extraordinary student ferment here, practically all leadership Jewish. The Catholics are year round hibernaters [sic] in fraternity woodwork" «detailed view»
74. 1967/10/06 TAL to Merton Thanks for all the good material. I had a few of these made up for the brethren when I was saying [stationary says: "US Forest Service… Leave a Clean Camp and a Dead Fire"] Peace movement is turning more violent - ideas of Martin Luther King, Jr. out of fashion / Philip Berrigan and others involved in civil disobedience in Baltimore planning violence against military property / youth influenced by "Che" Guevara «detailed view»
75. 1967/10/10 (#01) TL[c] from Merton Reaction to the airmail special about Phil and the group that wants to get violent. This will help reaction to Philip Berrigan's proposal to use violent means - Che Guevara, Regis Debray - violence against people is definitely off-limits - violence against property gets away from Gandhi's ideals, starts to get fuzzy morally, but Merton does not rule it out; however, will it undermine the real message behind peace movement «detailed view»
76. 1967/10/10 (#02) TALS[x] from Merton Reaction to your airmail special about Phil and the group that wants to get violent. This will help [same as TL[c] from 1967/10/10, except Archivist's note from Cornell states that certain words (containing Philip Berrigan's name) have been covered up and signature masked (Merton's name still listed), presumably for mimeographing and distribution to others, while protecting Merton and Philip Berrigan] «detailed view»
77. 1967/11/27 (#01) TL[c] from Merton Jim Holloway sent me a clipping about Phil: that and his piece in CW about prison (which was v. question of whether signing on to petition being given to the Pope should get mixed up in state policy (Church-state separation) but agrees with cause / does not want to be too controversial by accepting draft cards now with the new Abbatial election / contemplatives forming lay communities / Dom James as hermit «detailed view»
