Scope and Content
In 1964, Merton was preparing an exhibit of his abstract drawings (calligraphies) that was to be exhibited at Catherine Spalding College, Louisville, in November of 1964. Merton asked Samra Hicks, working in a campus office, to name one of his drawings. The first word that came to her was "love", and then she asked, "Is that too simple?" Merton used the title "Is Love Too Simple?" She had a paperback copy in the office of No Man Is an Island, which Merton inscribed that day.
Biography
Samra Hicks (later Mims) was, at the time of Merton's message to her, assistant to Sr. Anna Louise, Dean of Students of Catherine Spalding College in Louisville, Kentucky.
