Merton responds to a letter of Mark Yavorsky (letter to Merton not extant) about his writings on war and about Merton's sex life and sexual history. Merton responds to the questions about sex in a detailed and frank manner concerning his casual sexual relationships with women before becoming a practicing Christian.

There is also a monastery of ours near Sacramento, at Vina,  Merton lists some of his writings on war and on writings on eastern religions / gives a personal account of his sex life before joining the monastery, including a relationship leading to an illegitimate child / suggests he look at Trappist monastery in Vina, California, or the Benedictines at Christ in the Desert in New Mexico

I say "about" because the  possible dating of the Yavorsky letter (suggests 1966, but Merton mentions latest book as <i>Mystics and Zen Masters</i>, which was published in 1967) / Peacock explains that Mark Yavorsky was a student of Richard Peacock [at Palomar College, San Marcos, California] / offers to send a copy of the letter
