Descriptive Summary

Record Group: Section A - Correspondence

Dates of materials: 1956-1969

Volume: 250 item(s); 359 pg(s)

Scope and Content

This large set of letters mainly concerns translation and publication of Merton's works in romance languages. This provides perspective on the business angle of the publication of Merton's writings and on some of the squabbles that accompany artistic success. Within this correspondence is a large collection of original letters from Merton and Marie Tadié.

Some of the correspondence was filed with the common run of Merton's letters that was transferred to the Merton Center after Merton's death. Those received in 2003 were from a file at Gethsemani Abbey dealing specifically with Marie Tadié. It includes various correspondents including Abbot James Fox, Naomi Burton Stone, Pierre Malinverni (of the Société Française des Traducteurs), and others.

Biography

Marie Tadié, from Paris, France, served as translator and publishing agent for many of Merton's works in French, Spanish and Italian. Relations later became strained between Tadié, on one side, and Merton, his abbey and his American publishers on the other. Tadié tries to leverage exclusive rights to serve as translation and publishing agent for all Merton's books in romance languages. Merton, Gethsemani Abbey, Merton's American publishers, and Naomi Burton Stone were against this idea, and refused her offer. This prompted threats of legal action from Tadié.
