Scope and Content

This file contains a large exchange of letters between Thomas Merton and James Laughlin. The letters range from publishing matters to personal dialog between friends. There is a gap in the carbon copies of the letters from Merton from early to mid-June

Biography

James Laughlin and Merton first came to known each other through Merton's former professor at Columbia University, poet Mark Van Doren. Van Doren recommended some of Merton's poems to Laughlin for his publishing house, New Directions. These poems became
